1930s – Albion Plays Southampton’s Theatres

1933📍 Palace Theatre & Hippodrome, Southampton

During the early 1930s, the Southampton Albion Silver Band became increasingly involved in the entertainment life of Southampton, including engagements at some of the city’s popular theatres.

Bill Barnes recalled the Band playing at both the Palace Theatre and the Hippodrome, adding theatre performances to an already varied programme of concerts, contests and public engagements.

For some of these appearances the Band presented a particularly impressive sight, wearing its full ceremonial-style uniform and regalia.

These theatre engagements provide another glimpse of the important place the Albion Band was establishing for itself in Southampton during the 1930s, performing not only at traditional brass band events but also as part of the wider entertainment life of the city.
