1930s – Supporting Southampton’s Unemployed

1933📍 Southampton

During the difficult years of the 1930s Depression, the Southampton Albion Silver Band used its music to support the local community.

The Band took part in a special concert connected with the Mayor of Southampton’s scheme to assist unemployed people in the city.

At a time when unemployment and financial hardship affected many Southampton families, events such as this demonstrated that the Albion’s role extended beyond contests and entertainment. The Band was increasingly becoming part of the civic and community life of Southampton, using its performances to support local causes as well as providing music for public occasions.

A surviving concert programme from the event provides an important piece of archive material from this period and helps document the Band’s involvement in the life of the city during the Depression years.
