In 1937, members of the Southampton Albion Silver Band enjoyed considerable success at Amesbury, demonstrating that the Band’s growing reputation was not limited to full-band competitions.
Albion musicians competed successfully in solo and small-ensemble events, gaining a number of prizes and adding to the Band’s already impressive contesting record during the 1930s.
These successes reflected the high standard of individual musicianship within the Band under Musical Director Mr J. Williamson. Competition for places within the Albion was strong, and members devoted considerable time to rehearsing both individually and together.
The Amesbury results also continued a tradition of solo and ensemble competition that remained important to the Band for decades, later producing successes such as the memorable 1951 Tadley Solo and Ensemble competitions and eventually leading to Albion establishing its own annual Solo and Quartet Contest in 1962.
