In 1940, the Band suffered the loss of its Bandmaster, Mr. J. Williamson, who had taken over the musical leadership of the Southampton Albion Silver Band following the retirement of Mr. A. Halestrap in 1933.
His death came during the difficult wartime period. Ernie Allen recalled that those Band members who were not away on wartime service attended Mr. Williamson’s funeral, paying their respects to the man who had led the Band through much of the 1930s.
