1953📍 Southampton
In 1953, the Southampton Albion Silver Band took part in the celebrations marking the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Among the Band’s engagements was a major parade through Southampton and up to Southampton Common. A Royal Marines Band was given pride of place at the head of the procession, while the Albion Band led the Old Contemptibles.
As part of the wider Coronation celebrations, the Band also gave a performance at Shirley Recreation Ground, which Bill Barnes recalled as a new venue for engagements of this kind.
The occasion was another example of the important role the Albion played in Southampton’s civic and community life, providing music for some of the city’s major public celebrations.
