1962📍 Southampton
In 1962, the Southampton Albion Silver Band established its own inter-Band Solo and Quartet Contest, giving members the opportunity to compete against one another in a friendly musical competition.
The contest became an annual event and was usually well attended. Bill Barnes recalled the friendly rivalry that developed between Band members as they competed for the various awards.
Solo and small-ensemble playing had long been an important part of the Albion’s musical tradition, with members achieving considerable success over the years in Solo, Quartet and Septet competitions.
The annual contest helped continue that tradition while encouraging individual musicianship throughout the Band.
