1965 – Albion Wins the Southern Counties Area Championship

1965📍 Hammersmith Town Hall, London

In 1965, the Southampton Albion Silver Band achieved one of the most important contest successes in its history when it won the Second Section of the Southern Counties Area Championship at Hammersmith Town Hall, London.

Conducted by Mr Courtney Bosanko, the victory was particularly significant because the Area Championships formed part of the National Brass Band Championships structure.

Bill Barnes recalled the excitement of the result and the journey home afterwards. The Band stopped at Fleet Services, where members celebrated their success before continuing back to Southampton.

The victory represented the culmination of many years of progress through the contesting sections. Albion had restarted National contesting in the Fourth Section after the Second World War and had gradually worked its way upwards.

The 1965 championship therefore stands as an important milestone in the Band’s post-war development and contesting history.
