In 1971, the Southampton Albion Silver Band achieved another notable contest success when it competed in the Championship Section of the Wessex Contest at Southampton Sports Centre.
Albion won first prize, demonstrating the high standard the Band had reached following its steady progress through the contesting sections during the post-war years.
The success was made even more memorable by the Band also securing three individual medals, adding further recognition to an excellent overall performance.
By this period, Albion had progressed a long way from the Band that had restarted National contesting in the Fourth Section after the Second World War. Its appearance and success in the Championship Section reflected the considerable musical development achieved over the intervening decades.
