In 1975, an important change took place in the identity of the Band when the name Southampton Albion Silver Band was changed to simply Southampton Band.
The name “Albion” had been associated with the organisation for more than half a century. In 1922 the original All Saints Scouts Band had become The Southampton Albion and Scouts Band, before being re-formed in 1928 as the Southampton Albion Silver Band.
Over the following decades, the Albion name had become familiar throughout Southampton through the Band’s concerts, contests, civic appearances, engagements at The Dell and its long association with Southampton Docks and the great ocean liners.
By 1975, however, the decision was taken to adopt the shorter Southampton Band name, beginning a new chapter in the organisation’s history while retaining the traditions and heritage established by generations of Albion bandsmen.
The change came during another transition in musical leadership, with Mr Alec Wotton becoming Musical Director in 1975.
