1976📍 Southampton
In 1976, Mr Ray Alberry became Musical Director of Southampton Band, succeeding Mr Alec Wotton.
Alberry joined the Band following a distinguished professional musical career as a Royal Marines Bandmaster, bringing considerable experience of military and concert band music to Southampton.
His appointment came during a period of change for the organisation. Only the previous year, the historic Southampton Albion Silver Band name had been replaced by Southampton Band, beginning a new chapter in the Band’s identity.
Ray Alberry’s appointment therefore formed part of the continuing musical development of Southampton Band as it moved into the second half of the 1970s.
