In 1976, Southampton Band took part in one of the most memorable celebrations in the city’s sporting history when Southampton Football Club returned home after winning the FA Cup.
The Band helped lead the Saints home through Southampton, joining the enormous celebrations as supporters gathered to welcome their victorious team back to the city.
The occasion had a particularly fitting connection with the Band’s own history. Southampton Albion Silver Band had enjoyed a close relationship with Southampton Football Club for 40 years, beginning with the weekly engagement at The Dell in 1929 which had played such an important part in helping the young Band establish itself financially.
Although that regular Dell engagement had ended in 1969, the Band was once again alongside Southampton Football Club for one of the greatest moments in the club’s history.
The surviving photograph of the Band leading the 1976 homecoming provides a wonderful record of the close relationship between the Band, the football club and the city of Southampton.
