1980 – Bram Taylor Becomes Musical Director

1980📍 Southampton

In 1980, Mr Bram Taylor became Musical Director of the City of Southampton Band, continuing an association with the Band that stretched back many years.

Bram was already a well-established Albion musician. Almost three decades earlier, in 1951, he had been one of the Band’s successful competitors at Tadley, where he won the Senior Solo Medal during a particularly successful day for Albion’s soloists and ensembles.

His appointment as Musical Director therefore represented another chapter in a long personal association with the Band, progressing from player and successful soloist to taking responsibility for its musical direction.

The Taylor family’s association with the Band has continued into another generation. Bram’s son, Irvine Taylor, remains a member of the City of Southampton (Albion) Band today, maintaining a family connection with the organisation that now spans many decades.

Bram Taylor’s place in the Band’s history therefore extends beyond his period as Musical Director and forms part of the continuing story of the families and individuals who have sustained the Band from one generation to the next.
