In 1990, the City of Southampton (Albion) Band enjoyed an important return to contest success when it won the Wessex Fourth Section Contest at Poole under Musical Director Peter Hyland.
The victory came during a period of rebuilding for the Albion. The Band had previously gained promotion from the Wessex Fourth to Third Section, but the loss of a number of players and missed contests had subsequently resulted in relegation back to the Fourth Section.
Peter Hyland’s arrival as Musical Director helped bring renewed confidence and musical direction. The Band’s history recalls that he firmly established both his musical credentials and his patience by coaching Albion to the 1990 victory.
At the same time, the number and variety of performances undertaken by the Band were increasing, accompanied by what the history describes as a more forward-looking and positive attitude.
The period therefore represented more than a single contest victory: it was another stage in the rebuilding of the Albion as the Band entered the 1990s.
