On Saturday 17th September after a delay of two years the City of Southampton (Albion) Band were finally able to celebrate our centenary with a concert at the Turner Sims Concert Hall.
In front of an appreciative audience the band played a selection of pieces that reflected on our history. We were also joined by the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band, “The Spitfires” in order to recognise our roots as a scout band formed in the 1920s based in St. Mary’s.
The music in the programme included pieces that might have been played back in those early days, pieces we played for cruise ships, pieces that referenced the numerous foreign tours the band has undertaken over the last 30 years and others that were played at special events in our history.
However, there is no time for the band to rest on our laurels. We head off to Carvoeiro, Portugal for a weeks’ tour on Saturday where we will be playing a series of concerts across the Algarve. On our return we will be taking part in the annual Remembrance Parade at the Southampton Cenotaph before performing at a number of venues during the Christmas period. Look out for details coming soon.
