On the 21st June, the band played at Winchester Cathedral for the Southampton Master Mariners Shipping Festival in the presence of the Mayor of Southampton Derek Burke (our President), the Mayor of Winchester and the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan. The band played a few pieces before the service including Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral and an arrangement of Nearer My God to Thee which was allegedly the tune that the band played when the RMS Titanic sank.
The band accompanied the hymn tunes throughout the service with the cathedral organ and finished off the service with the National Anthem. Once the service was over the band performed a short concert in the cathedral for the enjoyment of those that had attended the service. This was due to have happened in the Deanery Garden but the weather was so unpleasant that this had to be abandoned. It gave the band the opportunity to savour the magnificent acoustics of the cathedral.
